We’re excited to announce we’ve gotten the go ahead for the August 25th Switch Dartmouth route. It’s been great working with the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission to bring this dream to life!
Switch Darthmouth is moving forward!
Canvassing of the route has been complete and we have a date set for this August 25th, 12-3pm. The 2km route will run from Alderney Drive and Portland Street through to Prince Albert as far as Cottage Hill Drive. The Planning & Design Centre is partnering with Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission to animate the route: bringing vendors, musicians, and recreation out to the street to celebrate getting around Dartmouth.
It’s only been a few days since our last Switch Open Street Sunday event and already the discussion about where to go next has been taking off. Wednesday June 12th the Planning and Design Centre, Stepping Up and a team of volunteers got together to dream big and envision what the exciting future of Switch could look like. The conversations were engaging and offered some excellent insight into the impact of Switch Open Street Sunday on the community and everyone involved.
But we’re not stopping there. On Wednesday June 19th a second Dream Session will be held to continue the discussion and grow the possibilities of this amazing event. We invite you to attend our second Dream Session, which will be taking place at the JBO Centre, 2103 Gottingen Street in Halifax at 6:30-8:30pm. There is no RSVP required and snacks will be provided.
Can’t wait to see you there!

Why did you come to Switch Open Street Sundays on June 9? (Or why didn’t you come?) Was it for the Recreation, Family Fun, to make a political statement, to bike, jog, people watch, or do you just happen to live on the route?
Last Sunday, as part of HRM Bike Week, a 2km route on the Halifax peninsula was closed to vehicular traffic from 10am to 3pm and open to walkers, runners, bikers, in-line skaters, strollers, and much more. Inspired by the growing number of successful “open street” type events hosted in cites across the globe, Switch is about promoting healthy and active living, in a fun and festive community-based atmosphere.
Dream Sessions: What’s Possible?
On June 12th and June 19th the Planning and Design Centre, Stepping Up and a team of volunteers will be hosting visioning sessions for the future of Switch Open Street Sundays in HRM. It’s time to DREAM about all possibilities. In these sessions we will cover the impact of Switch on communities, where we want to go in the future and how we can get there.

Remember, Your Streets, Your Vision!
2013’s first Switch: Open Streets event drew the spirit of active living and play. The little chill in the air cooled cyclists and rollerbladers going up and down the route and the dancers who found themselves at North and Agricola, hopping to bohemian tunes. Around 11am, a group of kids riding bicycles and tricycles led the first charge down North Park St.
Thanks to all of our volunteers who came out to support Switch, sponsors, and community partners: Halifax Community Health Board, the Halifax Cycling Coalition, North End Business Association, Breakhouse, and Stepping Up. See you all back on the route this September 8th!
